Top Reviews of Non-Toxic and Safer Sunscreens

Even when I can skip wearing make-up for long stretches of time, safer sunscreen has proved its value daily.

Sunscreen tops my list of personal care essentials! Due to some sunscreens containing toxic materials and having even been recalled in recent times, this category of product warranted considerable research from me.

    Researching Clean Dwelling
Since entering the healthcare profession back in the late ’90s, my mission has been to craft the healthiest diet and lifestyle possible for myself and my family.

Part of living healthily means understanding that what goes into and onto our bodies matters just as much – for me, healthy living doesn’t end at nutrition or food consumption alone.

Personal Care Products for Healthy Homes I recognize the role our home environments can have on our health, which is why I developed my own non-toxic household cleaning and personal care products for use around the house and body.

As is evident from this discussion, holistic living encompasses much more than food intake alone.

Clear Living and the MTHFR Gene
Many individuals become so focused on diet that we neglect what’s on our skin – an oversight as skin absorbs much more than most organs; thus what goes onto it can have serious ramifications for overall well-being.

Skin not only absorbs products but can also function as the “third kidney,” prompting me to treat mine carefully.

As someone carrying the MTHFR genetic mutation, detoxing has always been of vital importance to me; therefore avoiding toxic products with detrimental side-effects becomes ever more vital for me.

“Growing up in California, my friends and I baked throughout the photovoltaic spectrum. As soon as I reached my 20s I stopped going outside so much and instead spent most of my time indoors creating my first agency.”

As soon as I entered my 30s, I became fascinated with becoming older. To remain beautiful as I age, my three main beauty secrets and strategies include sleep, eating healthy and using cost-cutting approaches when possible.

    Sunscreen for Facial Protection
Once I discovered how effective sunscreen could be in helping stop wrinkles on my skin, I have faithfully applied sunscreen each time before going outside for walks – donning baseball caps and sunglasses when going outdoors as well!

Protecting the delicate skin on your face requires using products designed specifically to do just that, such as sunscreens that do not contain hormone-disrupting chemicals and various toxins that could endanger it. Finding an outstanding sunscreen without such elements should also be of utmost priority.

As my family started expanding, it quickly became apparent to me the importance of wearing sunblock when pregnant – since developing embryos are much more sensitive to harmful environmental toxins than children or adults.

    Sunscreen Recall 2021
In 2021, many sunscreen products had to be recalled due to dangerously high levels of toxicity.

As I conducted extensive research into personal care products from head-to-toe – including sunscreen – for my family’s protection, it gave me great satisfaction that all bases had been covered. I take my responsibility of protecting them seriously.

Sunscreen Recall 2021 involved an alarming amount of benzene exposure; an extremely toxic, carcinogenic chemical which has many detrimental health impacts for adults and children alike.

Why is benzene harmful? This chemical compound could prove lethal because of how it disrupts cell functions throughout the body. Exposure could result in bone marrow cells producing less red blood cells while white blood cells within an immune system failing,1 leading to life threatening outcomes for many victims exposed.1

Some industries use benzene to manufacture various plastic chemicals used for plastic production and other purposes, as well as for use in lubricants, detergents and pesticides.2 It may even be employed in some pesticides2.2

Unfortunately, mainstream sunscreen producers found to contain benzene during Sunscreen Recall 2021 included:

Coppertone, Neutrogena and Aveeno products were among those recall. My concerns over such widespread recalls of trusted household product producers was acutely felt.

What Are Safe Sunscreen Substances? In this list you will discover which materials don’t belong in my sunscreen product as these objects tend to not be considered appropriate protections against UV radiation.

This listing presents several endocrine disrupting agents including parabens and oxybenzone that may be lurking within sunscreen products. Be wary when purchasing sunscreen products containing any potentially dangerous elements – read labels carefully!

Aerosol Spray-a method which exposes lung tissue to hazardous chemical substances- and Aluminum- both neurotoxin coloring agents that impact various metabolic reactions- as well as photostabilizer/endocrine disrupting chemicals that result in detrimental cell changes- are both present.
Parabens-preservative and hormone disrupting chemicals that will create hormonal imbalance Propylene Glycol-skin conditioning agent with potential side effects including eye, lung and skin irritation and organ system toxicity
What Is Sunscreen Causing Most Cancers? Unfortunately, finding chemicals such as benzene or those which interfere with hormone regulation in products we trust could indicate that sunscreen causes cancer.

Given these recent incidents, studying healthy living is more essential than ever!

Need Help Selecting Safe Sunscreen Looking to choose safe sunscreen products? Be sure to read labels closely in order to make certain none of the substances mentioned here (and others) appear within it.

Mineral-based sunscreens such as zinc oxide merchandise may often prove more reliable.

    EWG Sunscreen Scores
In order to access labels accurately, visit the Environmental Working Group web page for guidance and recommendations.

    EWG Scores
I utilize EWG ratings myself in order to ensure the products I choose don’t contain harmful substances listed above.

Zinc Oxide Sunscreen While many prefer chemical-based sunscreens due to their light texture and ease of application, I prefer more healthy solutions with zinc oxide to block out UV radiation and protect my skin.

Zinc oxide, one of the key ingredients in my selected sunscreens, offers full spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Zinc oxide earned high praise from the Environmental Working Group due to its “robust photovoltaic protection with few adverse health impacts,” while EWG particularly valued it because it doesn’t break down through exposure to sunlight.

Uncovering a suitable sunscreen may not be straightforward, and I spent years exploring several non-toxic brands until finding my favorites.

What Is Safe Sunscreen? mes By now you should have an understanding of what constitutes an “unsafe” sunscreen product. Below these lines is a selection of safe products containing substances (some even safe enough to consume!) while effectively blocking UVA rays – I have listed my top favorites from top to bottom!

TruBaby Water & Play Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum Protection features an accessible ingredient listing – something I appreciate as one of the cleaner sunscreen products I’ve tested and recommended.

As my skin is very delicate, I prefer using personal care products suitable for children.

Be mindful that not everything labeled as baby safe actually is, so even when using “baby friendly” items you need to still conduct tests for chemicals.

TruBaby contains amazing ingredients such as aloe vera juice, pine resin extracts, coconut, castor oil and magnesium (from Epsom salt). Plus there’s also jojoba oil, green tea oil and pomegranate juice; what more could a mother ask for?!

My sunscreen is always at my door or in my vehicle so that I can apply it as needed, including before going outdoors during direct sunlight.

20% Nano Zinc Oxide with an SPF 30 rating and is non-toxic; fragrance free with EWG rating = one.
Waxhead Photovoltaic Safety Little One Zinc Oxide Vitamin E+D Sunscreen Lotion
I really appreciate Waxhead’s Photovoltaic Safety product because of the outstanding rating from Environmental Working Group as well as its exceptional scent – simply the best combination for children’s solar safety! It really deserves my highest ranking on Amazon and I recommend purchasing one.

As soon as I opened and used Waxhead on my fingertips, it instantly won my approval. It smells just like olive oil – something which appeals to my food-grade ingredients fandom immensely! I couldn’t get enough!

This sunscreen only includes six ingredients other than zinc oxide: spring water, extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, vitamin E and D.

At Lovable Little One Sunscreen SPF 30, they use only non-nano Zinc Oxide with SPF 35 protection that leaves absolutely no white residue when applied easily and smoothly, and that I appreciate immensely! Plus they make this sunscreen scentless! I found Lovable Little One Sunscreen very user-friendly without leaving a white film residue behind after applying. That makes me love them even more!

Made with grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil as its foundation, I find this moisturizer barely greasy which suits me just fine given my lifestyle living in Colorado’s high desert and having particularly dry skin.

EWG gives this food-grade product made of food-grade substances the easiest rating.

Thinksport Frequently Face Mineral Sunscreen has 21% non-nanozinc oxide with SPF 30 for water resistance, non-toxic ingredients (all 100% pure substances) with EWG Rating of 1, and can even protect from UV radiation exposure. I rely heavily on it every single day! It’s one of my go-to sunblock products!

Assume Often Face is made from aloe vera gel, cranberry seed oil, castor oil, vitamin C and magnesium for maximum skin penetration without leaving an oily or sticky residue behind. I highly recommend trying it!

I really love how radiant this sunscreen makes my complexion appear, with its subtle beige tint blending seamlessly into my pores and pores and skin – almost acting as an invisible make-up product!

This sunscreen is moisturizing, eco-friendly, mild, and versatile enough for both use at the pool or beach.

One extra bonus of mixing precise jojoba and coconut oils? They create an irresistibly subtle tropical aroma reminiscent of sitting beneath palm trees by the ocean.

Zinc Oxide Sunblock With an SPF 50 Rating And Non-Toxic Substances. Water resistant. EWG Rating of 1.
Badger Kids Mineral Sunscreen Tangerine and Vanilla is my preferred sunscreen because of how easy and quick it applies, rubs in easily, absorbs into skin quickly, and provides ample hydration without being oily or heavy.

While I prefer products without scent and won’t purchase items that contain cancer-causing3 chemicals such as fragrances, every so often there’s one with an aromatic blend from essential oils that offers up an exquisite scent experience.

Badger Mineral Sunscreen is my go-to product – its subtle notes of tangerine peel oil and vanilla fruit extract makes me smile every time!

Babo Botanicals Sheer Mineral Sunscreen offers 22.5% zinc oxide with SPF 40 protection and 98% pure substances that make up its composition, such as shea butter and calendula extracts. I like that they use plant ingredients such as these when crafting their sunscreen formulas! EWG Rating = 2.

This product is easy to apply and blend without leaving behind any weird white residue on my face, yet still provides my dry skin with sufficient hydration – something especially essential since I reside in Colorado’s dry, dusty desert environment.

Babo is delicately fragranced from calendula oil and smells softly yet distinctively pleasant, as well as including food-grade materials like cacao butter and coconut oil for enhanced skin benefits. If EWG had given this product its rating of 1, it would definitely rank at the top of my list!

I love having it at the seashore because its beauty lies beyond mere maintenance by the sand.

20% Zinc Oxide SPF 50 and is non-toxic and hypoallergenic with water resistance properties; EWG rating = 2. When people ask me “is vitamin D produced from solar radiation,” my response is both “yes and no”.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin essential to bone formation.4 Studies indicate it could also benefit in relieving symptoms associated with arthritis, mood disorders and more.4 Furthermore, research suggests vitamin D could assist with issues like:

Reduce Most Cancer Cell Improvement Whilst Controlling Infections & Avert Irritation.
According to Harvard Diet and Nutrition researchers, Vitamin D deficiency may stem from poor absorption or having an inadequate metabolic need for it. Simply not taking in enough vitamin D via diet alone over an extended period can also result in deficiency.”

Vitamin D deficiency may result in symptoms including:

According to Cleveland Clinic studies, indicators of vitamin D deficiency include migraines, headaches, rickets and osteomalacia (mild bone sickness). As per these assessments, indicators may include:

    Fatigue
    Muscle Weak spot Melancholy
Being someone living with Celiac and neurological illnesses makes me very interested in these findings – my vitamin D levels have been tracked using quarterly blood work for well over 20 years!

Solar Exposure Increases Vitamin D Levels mes Since maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is so crucial to people living with MS, I take an daily vitamin D supplement along with effective solar publicity practices every day.

As soon as my levels return to their optimal range, I will discontinue taking vitamin D supplements.

While I always apply sunscreen on my face, I don’t mind getting some good solar exposure on my legs and arms daily!

Vitamin D supplements help me stay at an optimum level and the sunshine provides me with some much-needed therapeutic therapy after leaving for my daily walks.

Clear Living and Sunblock Sunscreen debate is always contentious; I take an intermediate stance by applying sunscreen only on my face but omitting other parts of my body. What’s your approach towards photo voltaic radiation protection – do you use sunscreen or not?
